B Jenkins & Sons, Family Undertakers, Established 1880

Family undertakers, established 1880

Heartfelt farewells in the heart of Liverpool since 1880.

The oldest independent, family run funeral service in Merseyside. Five generations of the Jenkins family, still in the same Tudor cottage opposite the Picton Clock.

Someone answers this number 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Three things to know before anything else.

  1. Call any hour

If someone has died at home, or you simply do not know what to do next, telephone us. We will bring your loved one into our care and talk you through what happens now.

  2. No appointment needed

Unlike any other funeral home, no appointment is necessary during our open hours. Come to the cottage when you are ready. Mon to Fri 9am to 5pm, Sat 9am to 12pm.

  3. Stay as long as you like

Our chapels are yours to visit. Bring music, make a cup of tea in our kitchen, and stay until you feel ready to leave. All we ask is about fifteen minutes notice.

Our family

Started by a woman in a trade that had almost none.

In the mid 1870s Bethia Jenkins began caring for families in Edge Hill, and by 1880 the business was established as an independent company on Irvine Street. Funeral directing was then almost entirely a man's trade. She built something kinder anyway.

Bethia was our great great grandmother. Her son Ernest followed her, then Jimmy and Margaret Jenkins, remembered warmly by half of Liverpool. Today the fourth and fifth generations run the firm: directors Sheila, Gary and Andrew Jenkins, with Tony, Chloe and Emily Jenkins alongside them.

The horse and carriage Ernest drove is still requested by families today. So are the values she set, which is rather the point of staying independent for 140 years.

How we can help

Every funeral we arrange is the only one that matters that week.

Whatever shape the day needs to take, we will sit with you and work it out. Nothing here is a package you have to fit into.

Everton Blue, Liverpool Red

For some people, there was only ever going to be one colour.

The Everton Blue and Liverpool Red hearses parked outside the funeral home in the snow

Our fleet includes a blue hearse and a red one, because in this city that is not a novelty, it is a person's whole life. Alongside them sit classic and modern hearses, limousines, and our own Shire horses with a glass carriage.

Our chapels of rest

A room that feels like a front room, not a facility.

Our viewing room was designed to resemble a home environment, to create a safe and welcoming space. You can bring music to play, use our kitchen for hot or cold drinks, and stay until you feel ready to leave.

You are always welcome to come back, as often as you want. All we ask is about fifteen minutes notice so we can prepare.

Visiting

Chapel visits Mon to Fri 9am to 5pm and Sat 9am to 12pm. If those hours do not work for you, ask us. We will do all we can to meet your request.

Our city, our work

A hundred and forty years of Liverpool farewells.

Every photograph here is ours: our cottage, our fleet, our chapels, and the families who trusted us with a day that mattered.

Gary and the staff arranged my lovely dad's funeral. We have been using them since the 1970s. Nothing was too much trouble and they were always there to support us and answer any questions. They are all very kind, caring and professional.

Gary and the rest of the family have buried all my family that have passed since the 1960s… They are the best at what they do. They did a great service for my mum too in 2017.

B Jenkins & Sons dealt with both of our parents funerals. They were professional and respectful in all aspects and easy to speak to with prompt replies. Very pleased with their Service.

We used the services of B. Jenkins for my dad's funeral & I can say the service we received was professional, caring and very supportive. Everything was dealt with sensitively and with care, the process was explained clearly and the caring manner with which Gary, John and other members of the team spoke to me assured me that no question or request was a silly one or too much bother. I would have no hesitation in recommending them to care for your loved ones. Thank you
